What type of sealant is dishwasher and food safe, but still clear?

My parents have some bowls made of of fabric that was placed over some mold I assume, then sprayed or maybe dipped in some type of sealant. It is clear, very hard, dishwasher safe, and obviously non-toxic since they are used for food.
